Coastal Companion

Your coast. Your privacy.

What stays on your device

Coastal Companion works without an account. Saved places, selected area and notification choices are stored locally. If you choose optional usage measurement, the app stores up to 500 events with random identifiers on your device. No external analytics or crash-reporting service is connected in this version. A screen error may save a time and a fixed error code locally.

Location and maps

Location access is optional and requested only when you choose “Use my location.” Your device uses the position to select a nearby catalog area. The app does not save precise coordinates or send them to the conditions service. You can select an area manually. There is no background location collection.

The conditions service receives the selected public area ID and ordinary connection information such as your IP address. It retrieves public NOAA and National Weather Service data. Interactive maps request map data from OpenFreeMap and its map resources; those requests expose ordinary network information and the map areas viewed to the map provider. These requests are necessary to display the map and are separate from optional usage measurement.

Links and notifications

Opening official sources, directions or Seven Casts takes you to an external service under its own privacy practices. If optional usage measurement is on, Seven Casts links include campaign labels identifying Coastal Companion as the referral source. They do not include your app identifier or precise position. Tide reminders are scheduled locally only when requested; remote push delivery is not active.

Deletion and retention

Turning optional measurement off removes the local event history and its identifier. “Clear data on this device” removes saved places, preferences, cached conditions and local diagnostics, and cancels scheduled tide reminders. Fresh conditions may be cached again when you continue using the app.

The conditions service is hosted by Vercel on our Pro account. The service does not write application request/IP logs or store user records in a database. Vercel processes connection and operational information to provide and secure hosting. Standard Pro runtime logs are available for one day; provider security, billing and other records may have different retention under Vercel policies. No external log drains are configured as checked September 26, 2026.
